The star ingredient for S2021 happens to be the most expensive carrier oil on the market, not because it comes from an endangered plant, but because the cactus fruit seed yields very little oil when cold-pressed. This ingredient is prickly pear seed oil and you can read about it in this here.
I have been keeping my eye on this ingredient for years. It had been prohibitively expensive, but a cult-favourite in niche lipid-loving communities (yes, there are people who have special interest in carrier oils, I guess I’m one of them!). Recently, refined, cosmetic grade of this ingredient started appearing in Canadian wholesale markets but it wasn’t until the virgin, organic, cold-pressed version became available that I decided to include it this season. It is present in M2 serum as the first ingredient.
Next are argan oil and cold-pressed, not solvent-extracted, grape seed oil because they both have excellent lipid profiles, independent of consumer trends. One trendy ingredient is included though: plum kernel oil. Even though it’s a popular ingredient right now, the lipid profile is lacking in my opinion, so it’s present only at 6%. Rosehip seed oil will always be included for it’s pro-vitamin A content. Since we’re going into summer essential oils are included that control sebum-production.
All oils in this product are organic, virgin, cold-pressed. It is important to know, as informed consumers, that ingredients with the exact INCI listing can have very different qualities based on how the oil is extracted, how it is processed, and refined. What doesn’t the ingredient tell you? A lot. Please read about it here.
I hope you enjoy this serum as much as I am!
